Guide to the British Army Slang 

  • Tom = from the mythical Tommy Atkins - the impersonification of the British private soldier

  • Comedian = skiver

  • CO = commanding officer, one down from God

  • Sick parade = surgery

  • Medical centre = medical centre

  • Old sweat = career private soldier

  • Sergeant major = three down from God

  • NAAFI = soldier and family shop usually within barracks. One of the worst insults you could hurl at a Tom was: “you lie like a cheap NAAFI watch!”

  • Medical colour sergeant = five down from God
