I agree that the scale of this financial skulduggery is striking, and to me suggests forensic accountants might find similar issues in other parts of the NHS.
But the real scandal is how little all of this appears in our traditional media. It's as if someone has warned them off. In the end, the truth may trickle out but, just like the infected blood, post office and HS2 stories, the main actors will have long gone.
Some in our society, like policemen, members of the armed forces, medical practitioners and social workers, have to account for their mistakes, but others, such as politicians, civil servants and board members of public companies, appear to be immune.
I remember the first Chinese emergency PPE delivery of gowns.
I opened the package with the technician. Instead of having horizontal perforations to tear off each new gown, the line of perforation ran vertically from top to bottom. The result was left and right halves of useless gownage.
Criminality writ large. Is it any surprise that the disenchantment (and disinterest) is widely felt when 'others' over whom we have precious little control go ahead and rob us all and our grandchildren and those who will come after, blind? It is the staggeringly large amounts of money that is so incredible and have little meaning in everyday life - and yet every day the impact of that having been wasted gets played out on each and every one of us. That's what so difficult to comprehend.
But they are yet another not safe or effective solution! Avoiding flu and covid jabs, plus supplementing with vit B foods/supplements, vit D/sunshine, has more benefits.
Yes I heard that too. We are functionally broke as a country. Whatever I think about the current Westminster lot, we are between a rock and a hard place. And the tide is out.
Nothing to see here, folks. Just "social democracy" in action. It always involves income redistribution, to those in... greed.
Would Labour have done any better? I doubt it. But perhaps we have to tactically withhold that question, to encourage the current Govt to really dig down into these contracts. Even though we'll have to stock up on anti-emetics (perhaps we need a warehouse for £51m?) for when they announce the results and blame it on the Evil Tories - implying that Labour wouldn't have done the same....or worse.
Hi Seb, thank you and all our readers for the comments. Just to make it clear that I could not care two Hancocks who is in power. I am not interested in politics. For me it’s about ethics, probity, hard work and accountability. It is also about compassion and societal cohesion. We can’t afford this or that (see Caroline’s comment), because of waste, poor management and perhaps other stuff.
Imagine the fiscal screaming which would ensue if a Govt proposed borrowing these kinds of amounts, but to buy something actually socially beneficial. Something in medicine/health; or building affordable housing; or making public transport fit for purpose. Redistributing income to everyone's benefit.
The proposal wouldn't make it off the meeting-room table without being torn apart. But "in the middle of a global pandemic", no-one batted an eyelid at what was effectively "war spending" (Smedley Butler): buying things to be consumed and destroyed. And redistributing the income to those who needed it _least_.
Here in Victoria, Australia, vast sums were spent on futile contact tracing. This was part of a prolonged attempt to convince the public that the government's 'zero covid' policy was workable. Victoria officially claimed to have eliminated Covid-19 on 28 November 2020 - but then things went pear-shaped. A nightly curfew was imposed, in addition to the lockdown, the masking, and vaccine passports. Protests erupted. To combat the virus, police fired rifles loaded with rubber bullets at protesters. This is modern public health in action, apparently.
This is the problem when you spend someone else’s money to benefit other people: zero accountability. And I am sure that the wasters will say…”look there are other departments spending even more….” And the can is kicked down the road while public debt explodes. Root causes are not impossible to track.
The reponse to covid enabled and enriched all sorts of rogues. This is a consequence of panic and not calmly following established protocols that were put together in more level-headed times. I can see the effects in the organisation I work for to this day.
They paid 260 million pounds to an outfit at Stockton Park. Surely everyone knows the Great Football Gods/aka VAR inhabit that place. Nobody in their right mind would deal with anyone there.
As ever it seems "Consultants" do very well. Shock.
I'm reminded of the case where the MOD were criticised by Parliamentary Committee for spending exorbitant amounts on consultants to help them on procurement contracts.
What did they do ? They spent shed loads of money on er, consultants to advise them on how to reduce consultancy fees...
I looked up : Kuehne + Nagel Limited on companies house website however their turnover was only between 1-2 million ? Do I have the correct company?
On a different topic altogether I have been shocked at the number of friends & acquaintances who have had heart surgery. I know this could be anecdotal but is there evidence of a surge in cardiac issues?

We roared with laughter!
Lost in translation.
Theft.
Keep going. It must be possible to prosecute when there is evidence.

As I see it she is an outsider not associated with the great and the good, which may have left her vulnerable.

Especially when, apparently, we can't afford new Alzheimer drugs, according to NICE

Who to believe eh?
More trials with actual Alzheimer's sufferers would be really useful to determine efficacy or not.

I would put money on their not being much use. Have you read Peter Gotzsche's book Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime?
The biggest heist since the big flap.

It seems that companies doing business with the government equates to a gravy train.
the whole thing was a gigantic scam
